The Sector Rotation Chart

This chart gives you a single view of where every industry or sector currently sits, along with the path it took to get there over roughly the past five weeks.

What's on Each Axis

The chart is built from two separate measures, plotted against each other.

The horizontal axis (RS Score) shows how an industry or sector is performing against the broader market right now — whether it's outperforming or underperforming.

The vertical axis (RS Momentum) shows whether that performance is currently improving or fading — in other words, not just how strong something is, but which direction its strength is heading.

Both axes are centered at 100. A point sitting to the right of center means that industry is currently outperforming the market; to the left means it's underperforming.

A point sitting above center means its performance is increasing at a fast rate; below center means it's deteriorating.

Put both together, and a single dot tells you two things at once — current strength, and the direction that strength is moving in.

The Four Quadrants

Combining the two axes divides the chart into four quadrants:

• Leading — outperforming the market, and still improving. This is the strongest combination on the chart.
• Weakening — still outperforming the market, but momentum has started to fade.
• Lagging — underperforming the market, with momentum still fading.
• Improving — underperforming the market, but momentum has started to turn upward.

An industry or sector isn't fixed in one quadrant — its position shifts as its underlying strength and momentum change.

Reading the Trail

Every Sector or Industry on the chart has a trail behind it, showing its movement over the last five weeks. Select Show Trails if you want to hide it.

The trail tells you three things a dot alone can't:

• which direction something is heading
• how quickly it's moving
• and whether that movement is accelerating or leveling off.

A long trail means a fast, decisive shift; a short, tight trail means the industry has been holding roughly steady.

There's also a typical pattern worth knowing: strength tends to rotate through these quadrants in a broadly clockwise sequence — Improving, into Leading, into Weakening, into Lagging, and eventually back to Improving again. It doesn't happen on a fixed schedule, and not everything follows it neatly, but it's a useful shape to have in mind when you're reading a trail.

How to Use This in Practice

Start with where something sits right now — which quadrant, and how far from the center. Then look at the trail behind it. An industry sitting in Leading with a long trail arriving from Improving tells a different story than one sitting in Leading but starting to curve back down toward Weakening, even though both are in the same quadrant today.

The position tells you the current state; the trail tells you the trend behind it.

Narrowing the View

Toggle between Sectors and Industries to change what's plotted, or use the dropdown to select one specific industry and view its trail in isolation. You can also filter to show only industries currently sitting in one quadrant, or specifically the ones that have just transitioned from one quadrant into another.

Common Questions

Does landing in "Leading" mean an industry will stay there?
No — this chart shows current position and its recent five-week trail only. Industries move between quadrants regularly, and this isn't a prediction of what happens next.

Which matters more, the quadrant or the trail?
Neither on its own tells the full story. The quadrant shows where something stands today; the trail shows how it got there and how fast it's moving — reading them together gives you a much clearer picture than either alone.

The "Top RS Winners" (5-week trend) ranking doesn't match this chart — why?
Think of it as acceleration vs. absolute strength. Top RS Winners (5W trend) shows the change in ranking/RS over the last 5 weeks — i.e., which sectors are gaining strength fastest. This chart shows the absolute current RS level. A sector can be picking up strength quickly (a large gain, hence appearing as a top mover) while its absolute RS is still below the outright leader. Rising into the Leading quadrant signals a sector building strength — worth monitoring for potential breakouts.

How often is this data updated?
All industry and index stats, including this chart, are updated daily. However, since the chart plots a weekly trail, this week's marker shows performance "week-to-date" (Monday through today), not a full week yet.

Why is this chart based on a 5-week trail instead of daily or 1-week?
Since sector and industry leadership doesn't change quickly, a 1-day trail would be mostly noise, and a 1-week trail would be too choppy. A 5-week weekly trail best matches how sector leadership actually evolves. A daily-timeframe option is being considered for the future.
