What a Sector and an Industry Actually Are

A sector is the broad grouping — Auto, BFSI, Healthcare, and so on. An industry is the narrower business inside it. The Auto sector, for instance, contains industries like auto components, auto manufacturers, and auto parts. The BFSI sector contains industries like private banks, public banks, and NBFCs. A sector tells you the general category a company sits in; an industry tells you the specific line of business it's actually in.

Why the Industry Level Matters

A sector can look strong on the surface while the businesses inside it are moving in genuinely different directions, for genuinely different reasons. Industry-level classification separates that out — it shows you which specific business within a sector is leading, and which is lagging, rather than averaging them all into one number.

This also tends to be where market themes surface first. A shift in policy, consumer behaviour, or global supply doesn't usually move an entire sector evenly — it shows up in a specific industry inside it, ahead of the broader narrative catching up.
