What Is the Market Breadth Screen?
Tells you whether market strength is broad-based or concentrated in a few stocks.
Market Breadth lets you track how many stocks are actually participating in a move, so you can tell whether market strength is broad-based or concentrated in a handful of large stocks.
An index can rise while most individual stocks are flat or falling, because a few large, heavily-weighted stocks can carry it. Market Breadth looks at every stock equally, regardless of size, so it catches that gap between "the index is up" and "most stocks are up."
If only a few stocks are above their 200 DMA while the index makes new highs, the environment is not friendly β while on the other hand, higher participation increases the success rate of new positions.
